Landowners: Apply for YOUR Wood Duck Box from SCDNR
South Carolina is a state that’s rich in natural beauty throughout and part of this is due to our citizens extending a special effort to care for our land and the animal species native to the area. This year, the state’s Natural Resource department along with the State Chapter of Ducks Unlimited is reaching out to private landowners statewide in an effort to help our wildlife flourish.
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) is offering landowners across the state the opportunity to help protect the wood duck population by providing wood duck boxes at no cost to private landowners and other qualified applicants, for installation on your property. These boxes provide artificial nesting sites for South Carolina’s waterfowl when paired with ten-foot mounting posts and predator shields.
Box supply is limited, so interested applicants should apply as soon as possible. The deadline for box application is November 1st, 2018 and applicants will receive word regarding their application in January of 2019. Because the wood duck is the only duck species in the state that we can work at managing production habitats for, it’s among the most important species statewide for wildlife enthusiasts. It’s important to understand that there are fewer protective cavities in wooded areas available to the ducks due to human habitats and as such, we can consider these boxes a great way to give back to nature and help safely produce thousands of wood ducks across the state.
